Storm restoration in Texas means more than shingles, and the last decade has proved it twice over. Hail drives the ordinary years — the Insurance Council of Texas tied roughly $600 million in insured losses to the March 17, 2016 Fort Worth and Arlington storm, and about $400 million with some 32,000 claims to the April 28, 2021 storm across north Fort Worth and Keller. Then there is February 2021. Winter Storm Uri ran from February 10 to 19, DFW bottomed out at −2°F on the 16th, and the Texas Department of Insurance counted 500,196 claims with insurers expecting to pay roughly $10.3 billion in Texas losses. NOAA rates it the costliest winter storm in United States history.

The sequence starts with stabilization — emergency tarping the same day where the envelope is open, because every additional hour of exposure enlarges the loss. Then documentation: photographs and measurements of every affected elevation and interior area before anything is disturbed, because that record is what the entire claim is built on. Then the trades, in dependency order — envelope first so the building is dry, then structure and framing repairs, then insulation, drywall, paint, flooring and finishes. Running that as one scope under one contractor is not just convenient; it prevents the gaps where a roofer finishes, an interior crew starts three weeks later, and nobody owns the moisture that sat in between.

Hail and wind open the envelope, and that is the common case. But Texas adds two more. A hard freeze like Uri reaches building assemblies that are simply not detailed for it here — the state's costliest winter event produced half a million claims precisely because so much of the exposure was uninsulated or lightly protected. And across the Blackland Prairie, much of the region sits on Houston Black, the official Texas state soil: a deep Vertisol clay with very high shrink-swell potential covering roughly 1.5 million acres. It swells with seasonal moisture and contracts through hot dry stretches, and that cyclical movement shows up as separation at wall and ceiling joints, sticking doors and cracked masonry. Some of what looks like storm damage is soil movement, and some of what gets written off as "the house settling" is genuinely storm-related. Telling those apart is the job.

A fragmented restoration costs money in the seams. Each new trade re-mobilizes, re-measures and re-learns your building, and every handoff is a place where scope falls through and gets billed as a change order later. We will tell you when the cause does not trace to the storm. Long-run plumbing leaks, HVAC condensation, failed grading and drainage, and foundation movement on expansive clay all produce damage that looks storm-like and is generally treated very differently by a policy. Filing a claim that gets denied costs you time and puts a claim on your record for nothing.
