Gutter replacement in North Texas is usually driven by one of two things: a hailstorm that dented a system along its whole length, or years of heat and movement that finally took the slope and the seams past repair. Both are common here, and neither is well served by patching one more time.

Most failed replacements fail because someone matched the old system instead of sizing a new one. Plumbing code sizes roof drainage from the local 100-year, one-hour rainfall rate, and the capacity tables scale by gutter size and slope — a 5-inch K-style run at a shallow pitch handles on the order of a few thousand square feet of roof at a one-inch-per-hour baseline, and a 6-inch run handles substantially more. What actually determines your answer is how much roof drains into each run, how steep those planes are, and how many downspouts share the load. Large or steep roof planes, long runs with a single downspout, and valleys that dump concentrated flow into one section all push toward 6-inch gutters and 3×4 downspouts. We measure the contributing area rather than eyeballing the house.

Seamless aluminum is the default for good reason: no field seams along the run means no seam sealant to fail, which matters in a market averaging twenty days a year at or above 100°F, where thermal cycling is the primary enemy of sealed joints. Heavier-gauge aluminum resists hail denting better than the thinnest stock, which is worth the modest upgrade in a state that has led the nation in major hail events for eleven consecutive years. Hidden hangers screwed into sound fascia hold far better through wind events than the old spike-and-ferrule approach. And the fascia itself gets inspected before anything is hung — replacing gutters over rotted fascia guarantees a callback.

On expansive clay, discharge is not a detail. Much of the Blackland Prairie sits on Houston Black, the official Texas state soil, a Vertisol with very high shrink-swell potential covering roughly 1.5 million acres, and it swells and contracts with seasonal moisture. Concentrating roof runoff at one point beside the slab is the opposite of what that soil wants; keeping moisture even around the perimeter is the goal, which is the same logic behind the foundation watering many North Texas homeowners already practice. So we plan downspout locations and extension runs as part of the design, and we route discharge well away from the foundation rather than dropping it at the corner and calling it done.

If the runs are straight, the metal is sound, the fascia is solid and the problem is a handful of seams or a sagging section, that is a repair — and a much cheaper day. If the system is simply undersized, sometimes adding downspouts to split the load solves the overflow without replacing the gutters at all. We will tell you when either of those is the honest answer.
