Local Expertise

Local Expertise for Guthrie

Guthrie has more genuinely historic residential roof than any other city its size in Oklahoma — the historic district covers roughly 1,400 acres and more than 2,000 buildings across the four original townsites of Guthrie Proper, East Guthrie, West Guthrie, and Capitol Hill. That means steep late-Victorian and turn-of-the-century rooflines with multiple gables, dormers, turrets, cross-valleys, and original decking that was never designed for three layers of asphalt. Outside the district, the 1970s-and-later acreage builds along the Logan County section roads are conventional 4/12 to 6/12 composition on plywood or OSB, which is a completely different job.

We serve homeowners in Capitol Townsite Historic District, East Guthrie, West Guthrie, and surrounding Guthrie neighborhoods. Our crews know the local building codes, conditions, and project patterns specific to Guthrie.

Local Note

In the Capitol Townsite district, the roof is a regulated architectural feature, not just a weather barrier — swapping a historic profile for whatever the truck is carrying can put you crossways with the preservation commission and stall the job mid-tear-off. We handle the Certificate of Appropriateness question before the crew is scheduled, not after the deck is exposed.

Central Oklahoma Storm History

The storms that shaped how we build roofs here.

2010

May 16 OKC metro hailstorm

Softball-size hail across the metro — still the benchmark event Oklahoma City roofs are measured against.

2013

May 20 Moore EF5 tornado

Over a thousand homes damaged or destroyed; reshaped how central Oklahoma thinks about roof decking, fastening, and rebuild codes.

2023

April 19 metro hailstorm

Large hail raked the metro with insured losses in the hundreds of millions — a spring-season reminder that filing windows matter.

2024

May 22 wind & hail outbreak

Another multi-county wind and hail event in the heart of storm season — same-day tarping calls across the metro.

Notable Events in Guthrie

Local events, weather patterns, and demand drivers that shape how we approach projects in Guthrie.

  1. April 26, 1984 — a tornado touched down 10 miles southwest of Guthrie and moved northeast across the city, damaging a lumber yard, downing trees and utility lines, and dropping baseball- to grapefruit-size hail along its path

  2. May 24, 2011 — the EF5 tornado that tracked from near Hinton through El Reno, Piedmont, and Cashion finally lifted about four miles northeast of Guthrie after a 63-mile path

  3. December 2, 1999 — an F2 tornado ran from six miles southwest of Guthrie to seven miles north of town, causing roughly $275,000 in damage

  4. June 6, 2025 — a tornado-warned overnight storm brought damaging winds through Guthrie, snapping and uprooting large trees and pulling down power lines across Logan County

What to Know

Local Conditions & Codes in Guthrie

Climate & Conditions

Guthrie sits at the north end of the Oklahoma City metro's hail corridor, close enough that metro-scale supercells regularly still carry damaging hail this far north and far enough that they are sometimes still intensifying when they arrive. The 1984 storm that put baseball-to-grapefruit hail on the town is the extreme case, but the June 2025 wind event is the more common one: a fast overnight line that drops mature trees onto steep, brittle historic roofs.

Building Codes & Permits

Work inside the Guthrie Capitol Townsite Historic District is regulated by the city's historic preservation ordinance, and changes to material or exterior appearance on a historic resource can require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Guthrie Historic Preservation Commission before anything comes off. Outside the district, confirm current permit requirements with the City of Guthrie permit office — Oklahoma City's reroof rule does not apply here. Your contractor must hold an active Oklahoma Construction Industries Board roofing registration, and under 36 O.S. § 3614.1 no Oklahoma contractor may legally pay, waive, or absorb your deductible.
