Local Expertise

Local Expertise for Altus

Altus built out with the base, so the dominant product is 1950s and 1960s single-story ranch: slab-on-grade, wood frame, brick veneer on the street elevation, low-pitch gable and hip roofs with long unbroken runs. Layered onto that is an unusual volume of duplex and fourplex rental stock aimed at military households, plus later cul-de-sac subdivisions on the north and east sides with attached garages and slightly steeper pitches. Because the 1982 storm reroofed much of the city at once, whole neighborhoods share a replacement vintage and now age out together. Metal is a bigger share of the reroof market here than in central Oklahoma, largely because homeowners who have paid a hail deductible twice stop wanting to pay a third.

We serve homeowners in Almor West, Willow Creek, Wyatt Acres, and surrounding Altus neighborhoods. Our crews know the local building codes, conditions, and project patterns specific to Altus.

Local Note

The base drives the rental market, and PCS turnover means a lot of Altus roofs sit over homes the owner has not physically stood next to in years. Those are the ones where a small wind-lifted section on a back slope runs for two seasons before anybody notices the decking is soft — which is why we document rental-property roofs with dated photos the owner can actually read from out of state.

Central Oklahoma Storm History

The storms that shaped how we build roofs here.

2010

May 16 OKC metro hailstorm

Softball-size hail across the metro — still the benchmark event Oklahoma City roofs are measured against.

2013

May 20 Moore EF5 tornado

Over a thousand homes damaged or destroyed; reshaped how central Oklahoma thinks about roof decking, fastening, and rebuild codes.

2023

April 19 metro hailstorm

Large hail raked the metro with insured losses in the hundreds of millions — a spring-season reminder that filing windows matter.

2024

May 22 wind & hail outbreak

Another multi-county wind and hail event in the heart of storm season — same-day tarping calls across the metro.

Notable Events in Altus

Local events, weather patterns, and demand drivers that shape how we approach projects in Altus.

  1. May 11, 1982 — an F3 tornado crossed southwestern and central Altus and then Altus Air Force Base; NWS Norman's account of that day notes almost every roof in Altus was damaged by the accompanying hail, described as four-inch, charcoal-briquet-shaped stones

  2. February 22, 1975 — an F2 tornado touched down roughly a mile from Altus, killing two and injuring eight

  3. May 23, 2024 — golf-ball hail measured at 1.75 inches was reported just southeast of Altus

What to Know

Local Conditions & Codes in Altus

Climate & Conditions

Southwest Oklahoma runs hotter, drier and windier than the rest of the state, and the hail that reaches Jackson County tends to be wind-driven rather than falling straight down — which is why damage here concentrates on south and west slopes and on soft metals like ridge vents, valley flashing and turbine caps. The 1982 event that produced four-inch stones across the city is the local benchmark for what this corridor can do. Between storms, high UV load and a long cooling season cook the sealant strips on south-facing planes years before the north side shows wear.

Building Codes & Permits

Permitting in Altus is municipal and separate from anything you may have read about Oklahoma City's reroof permit rule, so confirm current requirements with the City of Altus permit office before scheduling. Any contractor roofing in Oklahoma must be registered with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board under the Oklahoma Roofing Contractor Registration Act and must show that registration number in advertising. And under HB 1940 (36 O.S. § 3614.1) it is illegal for a contractor to pay, waive or absorb your insurance deductible — an out-of-town crew offering to 'cover' it is telling you they will break state law on your roof.
