The gap between the two right-hand columns is the whole story. It isn’t manufacturers being dishonest — it’s that a shingle rated for decades of ordinary weathering is being asked to survive repeated hail impacts, straight-line wind, and summer surface temperatures that cycle the material hard.
And the practical lifespan number is often academic anyway, because a hailstorm ends most Oklahoma roofs before wear does.
What Actually Kills Roofs Here
Hail. The dominant factor. Impacts bruise the mat under the surface and knock granules loose, which accelerates everything else. A roof can take meaningful hail damage without a single visible hole.
Wind. Lifts and creases shingles, particularly along ridges, rakes and eaves. A creased shingle has a broken seal even when it lands back down looking fine.

You don’t need to climb up to get a rough read.
Check the gutters for granules. Heavy grit accumulation means the shingle surface is wearing through. This is the earliest reliable signal, and it shows up long before anything is visible from the driveway.
Look at the roof from across the street in low sun. Morning or evening light shows waviness, dips and uneven planes that flat midday light hides.
Look for curling and cupping at the edges. Shingle corners lifting or turning up is late-stage aging.
Check the pipe boots. The rubber collars around plumbing vents crack and split well before the shingles fail, and they’re a common leak source on roofs that otherwise have life left.
Find out when it was installed. Previous owners, permit records, or the home inspection from when you bought. Age plus condition is a much better answer than either alone.
Repair or Replace
A roof in its first decade with isolated damage is usually a repair. A roof past 15 with widespread granule loss, multiple leak points, or storm damage across several slopes is usually a replacement — and patching it repeatedly tends to cost more over a few years than replacing it once.
There’s also a threshold worth knowing about before you start down the repair path. Work that crosses roughly a quarter of a roof section within a 12-month window generally triggers an expectation that the section comes up to current code rather than being patched in kind.
